When his family is threatened, Whit Rustan, a black college professor, decides to escape the racism of the Deep South and move to a more progressive area. After a dangerous journey west, Whit and his family settle in a Californian suburb, confident that their troubles are finally over. To Whit’s amazement, he finds that his new community is almost as biased as his old one. After surviving several terrifying incidents, the family moves yet again, this time to a more integrated area. But when they visit the suburb a year later, they discover that they had indeed made a difference. A beautifully-told, heart-rending story of prejudice and the fight to overcome it.
